운전대를 바꾸지 말라! 엔진을 바꾸라!

o Not passive belief, but active, visible, everyday faith.
단지 수동적인 믿음이 아니라, 적극적이고 눈에 보이며, 일상에서 드러나는 믿음.

• James now focuses on speech as a key indicator of authentic faith.
  이제 야고보는 말(언어)을 진짜 믿음의 핵심 지표로 집중해서 다루고 있다.

• Introduction of the tongue: 혀의 소개

• James is not condemning teaching but warning against carelessness. 야고보는 가르침 자체를 정죄하는 것이 아니라, 경솔함을 경고하고 있다.

o The tongue is the teacher’s primary tool—and dangerous if uncontrolled.

고백: 보편적인 실패와 통제가 필요한 이유 (야고보서 3:2)

• “We all stumble in many ways.” “우리가 다 실수가 많은 사람들이다”

• Speech is the most common and destructive area of failure.

  말은 인간이 가장 자주, 가장 파괴적으로 실패하는 영역이다.

• Biblical witness to universal sinfulness:

  성경은보편적인죄,즉모든사람이죄아래있음을증언하고있다.

o Romans, 1 John, Ecclesiastes. 로마서, 요한일서, 전도서 등.

o James is not promoting silence, but discipline.

야고보는 침묵이 아닌, 훈련과 절제를 요구하고 있다.

• The tongue as a spiritual barometer: (영적 상태를 보여 주는) 영적 기압계 로써의 혀 o Mastery of speech reflects the maturity of character.

말을 다스릴 수 있다는 것은 성숙한 인격의 증거이다.

• Jesus’ warning: 예수님의 경고
o We will give an account for every careless word.

우리는 무책임한 모든 말에 대해 (심판 날에) 설명해야 한다.

James uses three vivid images: 야고보는 세 가지 선명한 이미지를 사용한다. 1. The Bit (v.3) 재갈 (3 절)

• A small object controls a powerful horse. 작은 재갈 하나가 힘센 말을 통제한다.

• Control the tongue → control the whole life. 혀를 통제하면 삶 전체를 통제할 수 있다.

• Uncontrolled tongue → life veers off course. 혀가 통제되지 않으면 인생이 진로에서 이탈한다.

  2. The Rudder (v.4) 키/방향타 (4 절)

  • A tiny rudder directs a massive ship. 아주 작은 키가 거대한 배를 지휘한다.

  • The tongue determines life’s direction. 혀가 인생의 방향을 결정한다

혀는 선생의 핵심 도구이며ᅳ 통제되지 않으면 매우 위험하다.

III. The Confession: Universal Failure and the Need for Control (James 3:2)

혀의 공포: 작지만 강력한 것 (야고보서 3:3–5)

3. The Fire (vv.5–6) 불 (5–6 절)

• A small spark ignites a vast forest. 작은 불씨 하나가 큰 숲을 태운다.

• Words spread destruction far beyond their origin. 말은 시작된 자리 훨씬 너머까지 파괴를 퍼뜨린다.

• Once spoken, words cannot be recalled. 한 번 내뱉은 말은 다시 거둬들일 수 없다.

• Fire imagery: 불의 이미지:

o Controlled fire = warmth and life. 잘 다스려진 불 = 따뜻함과 생명.
o Uncontrolled fire = devastation. 통제되지 않은 불 = 전면적인 파괴, 황페함.

V. The Utamable Nature of the Tongue (James 3:6–8) 혀의 길들여지지 않는 본성 (야고보서 3:6–8)

• Humanity can tame animals—but not the tongue.

  인간은짐승을길들일수있지만,혀를길들일수는없다.

• Descriptions of the tongue: 혀에 대한 묘사:

o Restless evil 쉬지 않는 악
o Full of deadly poison 죽음에 이르게 하는 독이 가득 차 있음 o A world of iniquity 불의의 세계

• “Set on fire by Gehenna”: - “지옥(게헨나)에서 붙은 불”: o Evil from the heart accumulates in speech.

마음에서 나온 악은 쌓여 말로 나온다.

• Words precede violence and destruction. 말은 폭력과 파괴를 앞서 나간다.

• Core truth: 핵심 진리:

o The tongue kills long before weapons do. 혀가 무기보다 훨씬 앞서 (사람을) 죽인다.

• With the same tongue: 같은 혀로
o We bless God 하나님을 찬송하고
o We curse people made in God’s image 하나님의 형상대로 지음 받은 사람을 저주한다.

• James calls this unnatural: 야고보는 이것을 부자연스러운 일이라고 부른다.

o Fresh and salt water from one spring? 한 샘에서 단물과 쓴물이 동시에 나올 수 있는가?

o One tree bearing two kinds of fruit? 한 나무에서 두 종류의 열매가 동시에 맺힐 수 있는가? • The problem is not the tongue’s power—but its inconsistency.

문제는 혀의 힘이 아니라ᅳ혀의 일관성 없음이다. 

VI. The Great Contradiction: Blessing and Cursing (James 3:9–12)

큰 모순: 찬송과 저주가 함께 나오는 혀 (야고보서 3:9–12)

• Speech reveals divided loyalties and an unhealed heart. 말은 나뉘어진 충성심과 치유되지 않은 마음을 드러낸다.

VII. The True Source of the Problem: The Heart 문제의 진짜 근원: 마음

• Jesus’ teaching (Matthew 15): 예수님의 가르침(마태복음 15 장): o What comes out of the mouth defiles a person.

입으로 들어가는 것이 사람을 더럽히는 것이 아니라 입에서 나오는 것이 사람을 더럽힌다

• “Out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.” - “마음에 가득한 것을 입이 말하는 법이다.”

• The tongue is a diagnostic tool, not the disease.

  혀는 질병 자체가 아니라, 병을 드러내는 진단 도구이다.

• Central question: 중심 질문:

o Who is holding the reins? 누가 고삐를 잡고 있는가? • Prayer of surrender: 내려놓음, 항복의 기도:

o “Set a guard over my mouth, O Lord.” “여호와여, 내 입술에 파수꾼을 세워주십시오.”

o The problem is not the steering wheel (the tongue), but the engine (the heart).

문제는 운전대(혀)가 아니라, 엔진(마음)이다.

• James addresses believers in the process of sanctification.

  야고보는 지금 성화 과정 가운데 있는 성도들에게 말하고 있다.

• Sanctification: 성화

o God’s ongoing work to transform believers into Christlikeness.

하나님이 성도를 그리스도를 닮은 사람으로 계속 빚어 가시는 과정. o Involves heart, mind, desires, and ultimately the body.

마음, 생각, 욕망, 그리고 결국 몸 전체의 변화를 포함한다.

• A sanctified heart produces sanctified speech.

  성화된 마음은 성화된 말을 낳는다.

• Final call: 마지막 부름

o Surrender the heart to God.마음을 하나님께 내어놓아라. o Allow the Holy Spirit access to our words.

성령께서 우리의 말에 간섭하시도록 허용하라.
o Let God tame the “2-ounce beast.” 하나님께서 이 “2 온스짜리 짐승”을 길들이시게 하라.
