Faith that never reaches the hungry, the sick, the lonely, or the forgotten is not faith at all—it’s a religious echo. 굶주린 자, 병든 자, 외로운 자, 잊힌 자에게 닿지 않는 믿음은 결코 믿음이 아니다ᅳ그것은 종교적 메아리일 뿐이다.

2. A Faith That Works in Partnership, Not Independence (v. 17) 따로 떨어진 믿음이 아니라 동행하는 믿음 (17 절)

James says it plainly: 야고보는 분명하게 말한다.
“Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.”
이와 같이 행함이 없는 믿음은 그 자체만으로는 죽은 것이라.”
Faith and works belong together. You can’t have one without the other. 믿음과 행함은 함께 있어야 하는 것이다. 둘을 떼어낼 수 없다.
Faith without works doesn’t move forward. It goes nowhere.
행함이 없는 믿음은 앞으로 나아가지 못한다. 어디에도 도달하지 못한다.

3. A Faith That Is on Display, Not Invisible (v. 18) 숨겨진 믿음이 아니라 드러나는 믿음 (18 절)

James introduces an imaginary conversation: 야고보는 상상의 대화를 들려준다.
“Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds.”
“너는 행함이 없는 네 믿음을 내게 보이라, 그리하면 나는 내 행함으로 내 믿음을 네게 보이리라.”
Faith is meant to be seen. The Greek word means to exhibit or to put on display.
믿음은 보이도록 의도된 것이다. 그리스어로는 전시하다, 드러내다 라는 의미이다.
Some argue, “Not everyone expresses faith the same way. Some people are quiet believers.”
어떤 사람들은 말한다. “모든 사람이 믿음을 같은 방식으로 드러내지는 않는다. 어떤 사람은 조용한 신자이다.”

If faith exists, it shows. 그러나 믿음이 있다면, 드러나게 된다.
If it doesn’t show—James says—you don’t have it.
보이지 않는다면—야고보의 말에 따르면—믿음이 없는 것이다.

4. A Faith That Comes from the Heart, Not Just the Head (v. 19) 단지 머리만이 아닌 마음에서 나오는 믿음 (19 절) James addresses another defense: theological correctness. 야고보는 또다른 주장을 말한다: 신학적 정통성.

“You believe God is one? Excellent,” James says. “So do the demons—and they shudder.”

There is one difference: demons at least tremble. 둘 사이에는 단 한 가지 차이가 있다. 귀신들은 적어도 떤다. So James asks us: 그래서 야고보는 우리에게 묻는다.
How is your faith different from that of the demons? 너의 믿음은 귀신의 믿음과 무엇이 다른가?

That kind of faith talks—but never touches. 이런 믿음은 말만 하고, 결코 손대지 않는다. It comforts itself—but not others. 스스로를 위로할 뿐 상대를 위로하지 않는다.

Head, Heart, and Hand Faith (vv. 21–26) 머리, 가슴, 그리고 손의 믿음 (21–26 절) James now brings forward two witnesses—two people who could not be more different.

Conclusion

Faith, like calories, cannot be seen—but it always leaves evidence.

• Is your faith involved? 당신의 믿음은 다른 사람의 삶에 관여하는 믿음인가?

• Is it on display? 일상 속에서 드러나고 있는 믿음인가?

• Does it come from the heart? 마음에서 나오는 믿음인가?

  I call it Functioning Faith. 나는 이것을 작동하는 믿음이라 부른다.
  You might call it active faith. Authentic faith. Living faith. Real faith.
