Text: Matthew 1:18–24

Introduction 서론

In the cast of characters surrounding the birth of Christ, Joseph alone has no speaking part. Angels proclaim. Mary sings. Shepherds preach. Wise men worship. But Joseph says nothing. Not one recorded word. And yet, without him, the story of Jesus’ birth could not unfold the way God intended.

Let us look again at Joseph—silent, faithful Joseph—and discover how his story may speak into ours.

다시 한번 요셉을 바라보자ᅳ침묵하며 신실했던 요셉ᅳ그리고 그의 이야기가 어떻게 우리의 삶에 말을 건네는지 살펴보자

I. JOSEPH’S DILEMMA 요셉의 딜레마 (Matthew 1:18–19)

Matthew summarizes Joseph’s situation with great simplicity:

마태복음은 요셉의 상황을 매우 간결하게 요약한다:

“Mary... was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit.” (Matt. 1:18) “마리아가...

But behind this one sentence is a storm of emotion.

Joseph was a carpenter—a builder of homes, furniture, and tools. As a young Jewish man, he likely waited until around age 25 to marry, saving and preparing responsibly. The parents usually arranged marriages, and once the contract was signed, the couple entered a year-long betrothal. During that year, Joseph would build a home for Mary. As a carpenter, he likely pictured every detail.

요셉은 목수였다—집과 가구, 도구를 만드는 사람. 젊은 유대인으로서 요셉은 아마도 25 세쯤까지 결혼을 기다리며, 책임감 있게 저축하고 준비했을 것이다. 부모들이 보통 결혼을 주선했고, 약혼이 성사되면 부부는 1 년 동안 약혼 기간을 가졌다. 그 기간 동안 요셉은 마리아를 위한 집을 지었을 것이다. 목수로서 요셉은 모든 세세한 사항들을 마음속으로 그렸을 것이다.

And then came the news. Mary was pregnant. 그러다가 소식이 전해졌다. 마리아가 아이를 가졌다는.

We are not told the details of Mary’s conversation with Joseph, but we can imagine the devastation. He felt betrayed, heartbroken, humiliated. Her explanation—that the Holy Spirit conceived the child—was impossible to accept. If he claimed the child was his, he would be lying. If he accused her of unfaithfulness, she could be stoned to death.

마리아가 요셉과 나눈 대화의 상세한 내용은 전해지지 않지만, 우리는 그 절망감을 상상할 수 있다. 요셉은 배신감, 마음의 상처, 굴욕감을 느꼈을 것이다. 마리아의 설명은—성령으로 아이를 잉태했다는— 받아들이기 불가능했다. 만일 요셉이 아이가 자신의 아이라고 주장한다면, 그는 거짓말을 하는 것이다. 만약 요셉이 마리아의 불충실을 고발한다면, 마리아는 돌에 맞아 죽음을 당할 수도 있을 것이다.

Matthew describes Joseph simply: 마태복음은 요셉을 간결하게 묘사한다:

“Joseph... was a righteous man and did not want to disgrace her publicly, so he decided to divorce her quietly.” (Matt.

1:19) 그러나 의로운 사람인 약혼자 요셉은 마리아를 부끄럽게 하고 싶지 않아서 남 몰래 파혼하려고 마음 먹었다.

Have you ever been hurt by someone you love? 사랑하는 사람에게 상처받은 적이 있는가?

Have you ever faced a decision that seemed impossible? 불가능해 보이는 결정을 마주한 적이 있는가?

Like Joseph, our choices usually flow from what we believe about God. In his pain and confusion, Joseph chose compassion. But God was not finished with him.

요셉처럼, 우리의 선택은 보통 우리가 하나님에 대해 믿는 바에서 비롯된다. 고통과 혼란 속에서 요셉은 연민을 선택했다. 그러나 하나님은 요셉과의 일을 아직 끝내지 않으셨다.

II. JOSEPH’S DREAM 요셉의 꿈 (Matthew 1:20–21)

That night, Joseph must have prayed: 그 날 밤 요셉은 분명 이렇게 기도했을 것이다:

“Why, God? Why would she do this? What am I supposed to do? Help me understand.”

"하나님, 왜죠? 마리아가 왜 이런 일을 했을까요? 제가 뭘 해야 하나요? 이해할 수 있도록 도와주세요."

And God answered. 그리고 하나님이 응답하셨다.

In a dream, an angel appeared and said: 꿈에, 천사가 나타나 말했다:

“Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus.” (Matt. 1:20–21)

“다윗의 후손 요셉아, 마리아를 아내로 맞아들이는 것을 주저하지 말아라. 그녀가 임신한 것은 성령으로 된 것이다. 21 마리아가 아들을 낳을 것이다. 그의 이름을 ‘예수’ 라고 불러라. 그가 자기 백성을 죄에서 구원하실 것이다.” (마태복음 1:20-21)

  Despite his pain, Joseph chose mercy over revenge.

자신의 고통에도 불구하고, 요셉은 복수 대신 자비를 선택했다.

 Joseph received what we often long for—God’s guidance in confusion, God’s voice in the night. But here’s the question: 요셉은 우리가 자주 갈망하는 것을 받았다—혼란 속에서 하나님의 인도하심, 한 밤중의 하나님의 음성. 그러나 여기서 질문이 있다:

Do we listen when God speaks? 하나님이 말씀하실 때 우리는 귀 기울이는가?

God still speaks today: 하나님은 여전히 오늘도 말씀하신다:

 • sometimes through a restless spirit 때로는 불안한 마음을 통해서

• sometimes through the words of others 때로는 다른 사람들의 말을 통해서

 • sometimes through blessing 때로는 축복을 통해서

• sometimes through hardship 때로는 고난을 통해서

• sometimes through repeated themes 때로는 반복되는 주제들을 통해서

• always through His Word 항상 그분의 말씀을 통해서

• and often through the quiet whisper of His Spirit 그리고 종종 그분의 성령의 조용한 속삭임을 통해서

 Jesus said: 예수님은 말씀하셨다:

“My sheep listen to my voice... and they follow me.” (John 10:27)

"내 양들은 내 음성을 듣는다... 그리고 나를 따른다.” (요한복음 10:27)

The issue is not whether God speaks—He does.

문제는 하나님이 말씀하시느냐가 아니다—하나님은 말씀하신다.

The issue is whether we quiet our lives long enough to hear Him.

문제는 우리가 하나님의 음성을 들을 수 있을 만큼 우리의 삶을 충분히 고요하게 하느냐이다.

Joseph listened. And listening changed everything.

요셉은 들었다. 그리고 들음이 모든 것을 바꾸어 놓았다.

III. JOSEPH’S DECISION 요셉의 결정 (Matthew 1:24)

Matthew records Joseph’s response with beautiful simplicity:

마태복음은 요셉의 반응을 아름답고 간결하게 기록하고 있다:

“When Joseph woke up, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded.” (Matt. 1:24) He didn’t argue. He didn’t demand more signs. He simply obeyed.

요셉은 논쟁하지 않았다. 더 많은 표징을 요구하지 않았다. 요셉은 그저 순종했다.

Joseph took Mary as his wife. He stepped into a role he did not expect: foster father to the Son of God. It would not be easy—raising a child who was not biologically his, explaining a story no one would believe, fleeing to Egypt, protecting his family from danger.

  “요셉은 잠에서 깨어나 주님의 천사가 일러준 대로 마리아를 아내로 맞아들였다.”

 (마태복음 1:24)

요셉은 마리아를 아내로 맞이했다. 요셉은 예상치 못한 역할—하나님의 아들의 양아버지—라는 역할을 맡게 되었다. 쉽지 않은 일이었을 것이다—생물학적으로 자신의 아들이 아닌 아이를 키우고, 아무도 믿지 않을 이야기를 설명하고, 이집트로 피난하고, 가족을 위험으로부터 보호하는 일은.

But still—Joseph obeyed. 그러나 여전히—요셉은 순종했다.

There is a world of difference between hearing God’s Word and doing it. 하나님의 말씀을 듣는 것과 말씀을 행하는 것 사이에는 엄청난 차이가 있다.

Jesus said: 예수님은 말씀하셨다.

“Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching... and we will make our home with them.” (John 14:23)

“나를 사랑하는 사람은 내 말을 지킬 것이다. . . 그리고 아버지와 내가 그에게 가서 그와 함께 살 것이다.

(요한복음 14:23)

Conclusion 결론

Joseph never speaks a word in Scripture, but his life speaks volumes.

요셉은 성경에서 한마디도 말하지 않지만, 그의 삶은 많은 것을 말하고 있다.

People may disappoint you. You may face dilemmas that break your heart. But when you listen for God’s voice—through Scripture, through circumstances, through His Spirit—you will discover the path God has prepared for you.

사람들이 당신을 실망시킬 수 있다. 당신의 마음을 아프게 하는 딜레마에 직면할 수도 있다. 그러나 성경을 통해,

상황을 통해, 성령을 통해, 하나님의 음성에 귀 기울이면, 하나님이 당신을 위해 준비하신 길을 발견할 것이다.

Joseph teaches us that obedience—even quiet, costly obedience—can change the world.

요셉은 우리에게 순종이 —조용하고 큰 대가를 치르는 순종조차도—세상을 변화시킬 수 있음을 가르쳐 준다.

And like Joseph, when God speaks, trust Him enough to obey.

그리고 요셉처럼, 하나님이 말씀하실 때, 그분을 충분히 신뢰하며 순종하라.

If you will listen and obey, God will include you in His ongoing story—His own cast of characters—just as He did with Joseph, the forgotten father.

만약 당신이 귀 기울이고 순종한다면, 하나님은 당신을 자신이 진행 중인 이야기에—하나님 자신의 등장인물들— 속에 포함시키실 것이다. 마치 그 분이 잊힌 아버지, 요셉에게 하셨던 것처럼.
