Introduction 서론
The Old Testament had its own version of The Great Pretender. His name was Jacob, and it meant "deceiver". He lived up

to it and was, in every way, a manipulator. 구약에는 큰 속임수꾼의 이야기가 있다. 그의 이름은 야곱이고, 그 뜻은 "속이는 자"이다. 야곱은 그 이름의 의미대로 살았고, 모든 면에서 조종자였다.

• He uses trickery to gain what he desires. 야곱은 원하는 것을 얻기 위해 속임수를 쓴다.

• Trading his birthright with Esau. 에서와 장자의 권리를 거래한다.

• Stealing the blessing, which was meant for his older brother. 형에게 주어질 축복을 훔친다.

• He tried to control his life on his terms, to move it in the direction he wanted it to go.

  자기 뜻대로 인생을 통제하려 하고, 자신이 원하는 방향으로 인생을 움직이려고 한다.

• He manipulated the circumstances of his life and the people who got in the way. 삶의 상황과 방해가 되는 사람들을 조종한다.

  In Genesis 32, Jacob faced a crisis. Returning to Canaan meant he would have to face his brother, Esau. When Jacob’s messengers came back and said that Esau was coming to meet him with 400 men, Jacob froze with fear. And so he prayed, “Oh, God, deliver me from Esau!” (32:9-12)

  창세기 32 장에서 야곱은 위기를 맞는다. 가나안으로 돌아가려면 에서를 반드시 만나야 한다. 야곱이 상황을 알아보러 보낸 종들이 돌아와서 "에서가 400 명의 사람과 함께 오고 있다"고 전하자, 야곱은 두려움에 얼어붙는다. 그래서 그는 기도한다, "오 하나님, 나를 형 에서에게서 구해 주소서!" (32:9-12)

  God answered Jacob’s prayer by wrestling with him until He left him limping. He had planned that if Esau attacked one camp, Jacob (in the other camp) could escape. But now he couldn’t run from Esau if he tried! He was totally dependent on the Lord.

  하나님은 야곱과 씨름을 하고 그를 절름발이로 만드시는 것으로 야곱의 기도에 답하셨다. 야곱은 에서가 한 진을 공격하면 자신은 다른 진에서 도망칠 계획이었다. 그러나 이제 야곱은 형 에서에게서 도망칠 수 없게 되었다! 야곱은 온전히 주님께만 의존하게 되었다.

God must break us of our self-dependence so that He can bless us as we cling to Him in our brokenness.

하나님은 우리를 자기 의존에서 벗어나도록 깨뜨리셔야 하며, 우리가 깨진 모습으로 그분께 매달릴 때 축복을 주실 수 있다.

1. God must break us of our self-dependence. 하나님은 우리를 자기 의존에서 깨뜨리셔야 한다.
God’s wrestling match with Jacob was not a dream or vision--dreams and visions don’t leave a man with a wrenched

hip. Jacob’s opponent was the angel of the Lord. 하나님과 야곱의 씨름은 꿈이나 환상이 아니다—꿈이나 환상 때문이라면 환도뼈가 어긋나지 않는다. 야곱의 상대는 여호와의 천사다.

• It must have been terrifying for Jacob. He was already nervous about Esau’s approach.
  야곱에게는 참으로 두려운 일이었을 것이다. 그는 이미 에서의 접근을 두려워하고 있었다.

• And then a sudden struggle. Not with his family or servants, but with a stranger. We must be clear that God was the aggressor in this instance. Jacob was defending himself. Jacob wasn’t laying hold of God to gain something from Him; God was laying hold of Jacob to gain something from him, namely, to bring Jacob to the end of his

  self-dependence. 갑작스러운 싸움이 시작된다. 가족이나 종들과의 싸움이 아니라 낯선 사람이었다. 분명히 하나님이 공격자였다. 야곱은 자신을 방어하고 있었다. 야곱이 하나님께 무엇을 얻으려고 매달린 것이 아니라, 하나님께서 야곱에게서 어떤 것을 얻으려고 하신 것이다. 즉, 야곱이 자기 의존을 끝내도록 이끌려고 하신 것이다.

1.1 God’s breaking process reveals to us the power of our flesh.
하나님의 깨뜨리시는 과정은 우리에게 우리의 육체의 힘을 드러내신다.

Why did He allow the match to go on all night long? 왜 하나님은 밤새 씨름하게 하셨는가?
God wanted to show Jacob the power of his self-will. The Lord kept waiting to see if Jacob would surrender, but he kept fighting. 하나님은 야곱이 자기의지 능력의 한계를 깨닫기를 원하셨다. 하나님은 야곱이 항복하기를

기다리셨지만, 그는 계속 싸웠다.

The flesh dies hard! Only God can tame it. Until God crippled him, Jacob wouldn’t give in. God let him wrestle all night so that Jacob could see how strong his self-will really was.

육신은 쉽게 죽지 않는다! 오직 하나님만이 육신을 길들일 수 있다. 하나님이 야곱을 절뚝거리게 하지 않으셨다면 야곱은 결코 굴복하지 않았을 것이다. 하나님은 야곱이 자신의 자아가 얼마나 강한지 깨닫게 하시려고 밤새 씨름하게 하셨다.

1.2 God’s breaking process reveals to us the power of our God.

하나님의 깨뜨리시는 과정은 우리에게 하나님의 능력을 드러내신다.

Until that time, we view obedience to God as an option available to us. But we’re in control, directing things as we think best. We choose our careers, our lifestyles, and our schedules, all centered around what will make us happy. God is a lovely, harmless grandfather to have around when you need Him. Some people resist God’s breaking process and grow bitter. Jacob could have grown bitter, not better. But he didn’t. Instead, when the Lord said, “Let me go, for the dawn is breaking,” Jacob clung to Him and gave that marvelous reply: “I will not let you go unless you bless me” (32:26).

그때까지 우리는 하나님께 순종하는 것을 우리에게 가능한 선택지의 한 옵션으로 여긴다. 하지만 우리는 여전히 스스로 통제권을 쥐고 있으며, 우리가 최선이라고 생각하는 방식으로 이끌어간다. 우리는 자신의 직업, 생활방식, 일정 등을 선택하며, 모두 우리를 행복하게 해줄 것에 초점을 맞춘다. 하나님은 필요할 때 곁에 계시는 근사하고 무해한 할아버지와 같다. 어떤 사람들은 하나님의 깨뜨리시는 과정에 저항하며 원망하기도 한다. 야곱도 그렇게 원망할 수도 있었다. 하지만 그는 그렇게 하지 않았다. 대신에, 주님이 " 날이 새는데 나를 가게 하라" 하셨을 때, 야곱은 하나님께 매달리며 놀라운 대답을 한다. "저를 축복하지 않으시면 보내드릴 수 없습니다"(32:26).

2. God blesses us as we cling to Him in our brokenness.

우리가 깨어진 채로 하나님께 매달릴 때 하나님은 우리를 축복하신다.

As soon as Jacob was crippled, he was able to hang on to the Lord for dear life. He knew now that if God didn’t bless him, he had no hope. He couldn’t trust in himself any longer, because he was crippled.

야곱은 절뚝거리게 되자 비로소 하나님께 매달릴 수 있게 된다. 이제 하나님이 축복해 주시지 않으면 희망이 없다는 것을 깨달은 것이다. 다리를 절기 때문에 이제 더 이상 자신을 믿을 수 없었다.

2.1. We won’t cling to the Lord until we’re broken. 깨어지고 나서야 비로소 하나님께 매달린다.
But we’re all like Jacob: We won’t cling to the Lord with all our strength until we have to. As long as there’s an

ounce of self-dependence left, we’ll trust in ourselves. 우리 모두 야곱과 같다: 깨어진 순간까지는 하나님께 온 힘을 다해 매달리지 않는다. 자기 의존이 조금이라도 남았다면 우리는 계속 자신을 신뢰한다.

2.2 Even in clinging, we’re prone to use God, not to submit to Him.

매달리고 있으면서도 순종대신 하나님을 이용하려 한다.

After the Lord asks Jacob his name and gives him a new name, Jacob asks the Lord to tell him His name (32:29). But the Lord replies, “Why is it that you ask my name?”

하나님이 야곱에게 이름을 묻고 그에게 새로운 이름을 주신 후, 야곱은 하나님께 하나님의 이름을 알려달라고 요청한다(32:29). 그러나 하나님은 "네가 어째서 내 이름을 묻느냐?"라고 답하신다.

Jacob wanted to know God’s name to gain a better understanding of Him that he could use in the future. Even though he was now clinging to God, Jacob was prone to continue using God as he had always done. But to keep Jacob submissive

and seeking, the Lord refuses. 야곱은 하나님이 어떤 분이신지 더 알아서 이후로도 도움이 될 수 있도록 하나님의 이름을 물었다. 이제 하나님께 매달리면서도, 이전처럼 여전히 하나님을 계속 이용하려는 성향을 보인 것이다. 그런데 주님께서는 야곱이 끝까지 복종하도록 하기 위해 자신의 이름을 알려주지 않으신다.

2.3 Clinging to God in our brokenness is the key to power with God and with others.

깨어졌을 때 하나님께 매달리는 것이 하나님과 사람들과 함께하는 능력의 열쇠이다.

When Jacob clings to the Lord and demands that He bless him, the Lord gives him a new name. To the Hebrews, the name reflects the character. So God, speaking prophetically, gives Jacob a new name: Instead of Jacob, he is to be called Israel. Instead of a supplanter, he is to become a prevailer.

야곱이 주님께 매달려 축복을 요구하자, 주님께서 그에게 새 이름을 주신다. 히브리인들에게 이름은 성품을 의미한다. 그래서 하나님은 예언적으로 말씀하시며 야곱에게 새 이름을 주신다. 야곱 대신 ‘이스라엘’이라 불리게 된다. 속이는 자가 아니라 이기는 자가 되는 것이다.

As Jacob went limping to face Esau, he was more powerful in God’s strength and his own weakness than he ever could have been in his own scheming and strength.

야곱이 이제 절뚝거리며 에서를 만나러 나아갈 때, 야곱은, 하나님의 능력과 자신의 약함 가운데, 이전에 자신의 꾀와 힘으로 행할 때보다 더 강한 자가 된다.

Conclusion: 결론
Two concluding applications: 두 가지 결론적 적용점:

• Take time to get alone with God. 시간을 내어 하나님과 단둘이 있으라.

• Use your victories that come out of God’s breaking to teach others. When Jacob’s family asked him why he was limping, he could have concealed the lesson to save face: “Just a little arthritis, I guess.” However, he was willing to share with us what he had learned.

  하나님의 깨뜨림으로 얻은 승리의 이야기로 다른 사람들을 가르치라. 가족들이 왜 절뚝거리는지 물었을 때, 야곱은 체면을 지키려고 숨길 수도 있었을 것이다: "그냥 관절염 인 것 같아." 그러나, 야곱은 자신이 배운 교훈을 우리와 나누기를 원했다.
