When you read the Old Testament, the story of the Babylonian exile stands out. The destruction of the Temple and the exile to Babylon represent a huge shock to the Jewish people. It may be hard to understand today what it must have meant at that time, because we have no comparable experience. Our reading from the prophet Zechariah places us right in the middle of the return after the exile.

구약성경을 읽을 때 바빌론 유배 이야기가 두드러진다. 성전의 파괴와 바빌론 유배는 유대인들에게 엄청난 충격을 의미했다. 오늘날 우리에게는 이와 비교할 만한 경험이 없기 때문에, 그 당시의 상황이 어떤 의미였는지 이해하기

어려울 수 있다. 선지자 스가랴의 말씀은 우리를 유배 이후 귀환의 한가운데로 이끈다.

1. When the heavens fell: 하늘이 무너졌을 때:

Let’s recap the story briefly: 이야기를 간략하게 요약해 보자:

• Jerusalem was the center of Jewish life. The temple was there, and for them, it was not only the house of God, but the heart of being Jewish. Life was good, and God was good. They had the temple, for them the house of God.

예루살렘은 유대인 삶의 중심지였다. 그 곳에는 성전이 있었고, 유대인들에게 성전은 하나님의 집일 뿐만 아니라 유대인의 존재의 심장이었다. 삶은 좋았고, 하나님도 선하셨다. 그들에게는 성전, 즉 하나님의 집이 있었다.

• Then, everything changed. The Babylonian Exile began in 597 B.C.E. with the deportation of Judahite king Jehoiachin, his family, skilled craftsmen, warriors, and 10,000 additional captives (2 Kings 24:12–16).

그때, 모든 것이 바뀌었다. 바빌론 유배는 기원전 597 년에 시작되었는데, 당시 유다 왕 여호야긴과, 그의 가족, 숙련된 장인들, 전사, 그리고 추가로 1 만 명의 포로들이 끌려갔다(열왕기하 24:12-16).

• Two more deportations took place: one in 586 B.C.E., when Jerusalem and the Temple were destroyed, and another in 582 B.C.E.

예루살렘에서두 번의 추방이 더 있었다. 기원전 586년 예루살렘과 성전이 파괴되었을 때와, 또 다른 한 번은 기원전 582 년이었다.

하지만 하나님은 유다 백성에게 그들이 돌아올 것이라고 약속하셨다. 70 년이 걸렸다. 이사야가 2 세기 전에 예언했던 것처럼(이사야 44:28), 페르시아 키루스왕이 포로들이 돌아가 예루살렘을 재건해야 한다는 칙령을 내렸다. 당시의 세 명의 주요 지도자는 스룹바벨, 에스라, 느헤미야였다.

스룹바벨이 첫 번째 포로 집단을 이끌고 예루살렘으로 돌아왔을 때, 그들이 가장 먼저 한 일은 예배와 희생 제사를

다시 시작할 수 있도록 제단을 재건하는 것이었다. 그들은 또한 새 성전을 위한 기초를 놓았다.

During this time, two months into the effort, the people needed a word from the Lord! They needed hope and encouragement. They needed the motivation that comes from knowing that this project is worthwhile. This was especially true when the people were a group of refugees returning to a devastated country, still surrounded by hostile neighbors.

이 시기 동안, 재건을 위한 노력을 시작한 두 달 만에, 사람들은 주님의 말씀이 필요했다! 그들에게는 희망과 격려가 필요했고, 재건을 위한 이 노력이 가치 있는 일이라는 자각에서 오는 동기 부여가 필요했다. 특히 여전히 적대적인 이웃들에 둘러싸여 있는 폐허가 된 나라로 귀환한 난민들에게는 더욱 그랬다.

Rebuilding is indeed no joke. Gone is the initial excitement and dream. All they had to work with was a heap of building rubble, scattered dreams, and opposition. Rebuilding your life, dream, and future is indeed a challenge.

재건은 실제로 쉽지 않은 일이다. 처음의 흥분과 꿈은 사라진다. 유다 백성들이 마주한 것은 건물 잔해 더미, 흩어진 꿈, 그리고 반대뿐이었다. 당신의 삶, 꿈, 그리고 미래를 재건하는 것은 사실 도전이다.

4. But God...... 그러나 하나님은......

The opening words of Zechariah are of great importance. For most people, names aren’t that big of a deal. For the Jews, a person’s name carried great significance. The text begins with the full patronymic formula, listing the three names.

스가랴서의 첫 말씀이 매우 중요하다. 대부분의 사람들에게 이름은 그다지 중요하지 않다. 유대인들에게 사람의

이름은 큰 의미를 지니고 있었다.

본문은 세 개의 이름을 나열하는 완전한 부계의 명명 공식으로 시작하고 있다.

• The name Zechariah, a common one in the Old Testament, means "Yhwh Remembers." What and who does God

remember? Them! Their past, their former glory, the exile, the promises! They are facing a new beginning, lots of hardships, and at times, it feels as if God has forgotten them. Here, God tells them, 'I remember!'

스가랴라는 이름은 구약성경에서 흔한 이름으로 "여호와께서 기억하신다"는 뜻이다. 하나님은 무엇을, 누구를 기억하시는가? 그들! 그들의 과거, 이전의 영광, 유배, 약속! 유다 백성들은 새로운 시작, 많은 어려움에 직면하고 있으며, 때로는 하나님이 자신들을 잊으신 것처럼 느끼고 있다. 이 때 하나님은 그들에게 "나는 기억한다!"라고 말씀하신다.

• Berekiah means 'the Lord blesses. God not only remembers. He remembers to bless! He is the one who bestows blessings. ‘Blessing’ means God’s power meeting my lack of power. Empowerment. That’s what happened at Pentecost. God remembers to bless – to answer prayers, to make a breakthrough, to do what is not humanly possible!

베레갸는 "하나님이 축복하신다"는 의미이다. 하나님은 단지 기억하시는 것만이 아니다. 하나님은 축복하려고 기억하신다! 하나님은 축복을 베푸시는 분이다. '축복'은 하나님의 능력이 나의 힘 부족을 만나는 것을 의미한다. 권능 부여하는 것. 그것이 오순절에 일어난 일이다. 하나님은 기도에 응답하고, 돌파구를 만들고, 인간적으로 불가능한 일을 하도록 축복하기 위해 기억하신다

하나님의 때를 신뢰하는 것은 어려울 수 있다, 특히 우리의 계획이 즉각적인 결과와 일치하지 않을 때는. 그러나, 하나님의 때는 항상 옳다는 것을 인정하는 것은 엄청난 평화와 확신을 가져다 줄 수 있다.

• Some of the worst decisions you can make in your life are made in a hurry, so today, slow down, relax, and trust in the goodness of God. He’ll get you to your destiny, not a moment too soon or too late — He is always right on time!

당신이 인생에서 내릴 수 있는 최악의 결정 중 일부는 서둘러서 결정을 한다. 그러므로 오늘, 속도를 늦추고, 편안히, 하나님의 선하심을 신뢰하라. 그분은 당신을 당신의 운명으로 인도하실 것이다, 너무 이르지도, 너무 늦지도 않게 - 그분은 항상 정시에 일하신다!
