Introduction 서론

I want to invite you to go for a walk. 여러분을 걷기로 초대하고자 한다. The Bible is, among other things, a list of unforgettable walks.
성경은, 많은 이야기들 가운데, 잊을 수 없는 여러 “걷기”의 이야기들이다.

• The first one was taken by God himself, who, used to walk in the garden of Eden in the cool of the day. 첫 번째는, 저녁, 서늘한 때에 에덴 동산을 걷곤 하시던 하나님의 걷기이다.

• There was the challenging walk that Abraham took with his son, Isaac, on the road to Moriah. 아브라함은 아들 이삭과 함께 모리아 산으로 가는 힘든 여정을 걸었다.

• There was the liberating walk Moses and the Israelites took through the Red Sea, 모세와 이스라엘 백성이 홍해를 건너던 자유로 향하는 걷기,

• and the frustrating walk of the Israelites through the desert for 40 years; 그리고 이스라엘 백성의 40 년 광야에서의, 좌절과 막막한 걷기가 있다

• Joshua’s triumphant walk around Jericho, 여호수아의 승리를 거둔 여리고 성 걷기,

• The disciples’ illuminating walk to Emmaus, and 엠마오로 향하는 제자들의 깨달음의 걷기, 그리고

• Paul’s interrupted walk to Damascus. 다메섹으로 가던 바울을 멈추게 한 걷기,

• Jesus’ walk from the Praetorium to Golgotha called the Via Dolorosa—the way of great sorrow. 예수님께서 프리토리움(총독관저*)에서 골고다까지 비아 돌로로사, 즉 고난의 길을 걸으셨던 이야기.

  But perhaps the most unforgettable walk of all was taken by Peter the day he stepped out of a boat and walked on the water. 그러나 무엇보다 잊을 수 없는 걷기는 바로 베드로가 배에서 내려 물위를 걸었던 그 날의 이야기이다.

• Peter’s walk serves as an invitation to everyone who, like him, wants to step out in faith and experience more of the power and presence of God.

베드로의 걷기는, 베드로처럼 믿음으로 걸음을 내딛고 하나님의 능력과 임재를 경험하기를 원하는 모두에게 주시는 초대장과 같다.

1. Preamble to the Water Walk 물 위를 걷기 전 이야기
How does something like this happen? 어떻게 이런 일이 일어날 수 있을까?

• Peter and his friends got into a small boat one afternoon to cross the Sea of Galilee. Jesus wanted to be alone, so they went boating without him.

  베드로와 친구들은 어느 오후에 작은 배를 타고 갈릴리 바다를 건너고 있었다. 예수님은 혼자 계시기를 원하셨기에, 제자들은 예수님 없이 배를 타고 떠났다.

• But this time, a storm rolled in. The gospel of Matthew says the boat was “tormented” by the waves. It was so fierce that the only thing the disciples could do was keep the boat upright. .

  그런데 이때 폭풍이 몰아쳤다. 마태복음에서는 배가 파도에 “시달렸다”고 기록하고 있다. 폭풍이 너무

  거세서 제자들이 할 수 있는 일은 배가 가라앉지 않도록 붙잡는 것뿐이었다.

• Then one of the disciples saw a shadow moving toward them, someone walking on the water.

  그때 제자들 중 한 사람이, 자신들을 향해 움직이고 있는, 물 위를 걸어오고 있는 누군가의 그림자 같은 형상을 보았다.

2. A God-moment 하나님의 순간
What was Jesus up to, walking around on the lake?

예수님은 왜 물 위를 걸으셨을까?

In Mark’s version (Mark 6:47–52) Jesus “intended to pass them by” on the water, but when they saw him walking on the lake, they thought it was a ghost. Why did Jesus want to “pass them by”? The verb par-erchomai (“to pass by”) is used in the Greek translation of the Old Testament as a technical term to refer to a theophany—those defining moments when God made “striking and temporary appearances in the earthly realm to a select individual or group to communicate a message.”

마가복음(6:47–52)에서는 예수님이 물 위를 걸어 “그들을 지나가려고” 하셨다고 기록한다. 그런데 제자들이 예수님이 물 위를 걸어오시는 것을 보고 그분을 유령이라고 생각했다. 그렇다면 왜 예수님은 “그들을 지나가려” 하셨을까?
헬라어 동사 par-erchomai(‘지나가다’)는 구약성경의 헬라어 번역본에서 현현(theophany)을 가리키는 전문 용어로 사용되고 있는데, 현현의 순간은 하나님께서 선택받은 개인이나 집단에게 메시지를 전하기 위해 지상에 뚜렷하고도 일시적으로 나타나시는 결정적인 순간을 의미한다.

• God put Moses in a cleft in a rock so Moses could see “‘while my glory passes by.’...The LORD passed before him.” 하나님께서 모세를 바위 틈에 두시고, 모세가 “’내 영광이 지나가는 동안.’ . . . 여호와께서 그의 앞으로

지나가시는 것” 을 볼 수 있게 하셨다. 페이지2/4

• God told Elijah to stand on the mountain “for the LORD is about to pass by.”
하나님은 엘리야에게 “여호와께서 지나가실 것”이기에 산 위에 서있으라고 말씀하셨다.

So when Jesus came to the disciples on the water intending “to pass them by,” he was not just doing a neat magic trick. He was revealing his divine presence and power. Only God can do such a thing: “He alone ... treads on the waves of

the sea.” 그러므로 예수님이 물 위로 제자들에게 다가오셔서 “지나가려 하셨다”는 것은 단순히 멋진 속임수를 보여주신 것이 아니다. 하나님은 자신의 신성한 임재와 능력을 드러내신 것이다. 오직 하나님만 그런 일을 하실 수 있다. 성경은 말한다: “오직 그분 만이. . .바다 물결 위를 걸으신다.”

They didn’t fully grasp it yet, but God was visiting them in the water-walking flesh.
제자들은 그 의미를 온전히 이해하지 못했지만, 하나님은 사실 물 위를 걷는 육신을 입은 모습으로 제자들을

방문하고 계셨다.

Matthew wants his readers t ᄋ o know that Jesus often comes when least expected—3:00 A.M., in the middle of a storm.
마태는 자신의 독자들이, 예수님은 종종 전혀 예상치 못한 순간—새벽 3 시, 폭풍 한가운데—에 찾아오신다는 것을

알기를 원한다.

3. The Pattern 패턴

• There is always a call. 언제나 부르심이 있다.

• There is always fear. 언제나 두려움이 따른다.

o It may be a fear of failure. 실패에 대한 두려움일 수도 있다.

o It may even be a fear of God. 심지어 하나님에 대한 두려움일 수도 있다. • There is always reassurance. 언제나 확신이 주어진다.

o God promises his presence 하나님은 자신의 임재를 약속하신다.
o God also promises to give whatever gifts are needed to fulfill his assignment

또한 하나님은 맡기신 소명을 이루는 데 필요한 모든 은사를 주실 것을 약속하신다.

• There is always a decision. 언제나 결단의 순간이 있다.

• There is always a changed life. 언제나 변화된 삶이 있다.

o Those who say yes to God’s call don’t walk the walk perfectly—not by a long shot. But because they say yes to God, they learn and grow even from their failures. And they become part of his actions to redeem the world.

하나님의 부르심에 예라고 응답하는 사람들이 완벽하게 그 길을 걷는 것은 아니다 - 전혀 그렇지 않다. 그러나 하나님께 “예”라고 말했기에, 실패를 통해서도 배우고 성장한다. 그리고 세상을 구속하기 위해 하나님의 일에 동참하게 된다.

o Those who say no are changed, too. They become a little harder, a little more resistant to his calling, a little more likely to say no the next time.

하나님께 아니오 라고 말하는 사람들에게도 변화는 있다. 조금 더 마음이 굳어지고, 하나님의 부르심에 조금 더 저항하게 되며, 다음에도 “아니오” 라고 말할 가능성이 더 커진다.

Conclusion: 결론
Peter had to: 베드로가 해야 했던 일은 다음과 같다:

• discern God’s call, 하나님의 부르심을 분별하고,

• transcend fear, risking faith, 두려움을 넘어 믿음으로 도전하며,

• manage failure, and 실패를 감당하고,

• trust God. 하나님을 신뢰하는 것이다.

  I hope that it prompts you to say yes to God.

  저는 이를 통해 여러분들이 하나님께 “예”라고 응답하게 되기를 바란다.

  So I want to invite you to go for a walk. On the water.

  그래서 여러분을 걷도록 초대하고 싶다. 물 위로.

  Just remember one thing: if you want to walk on water, you have to get out of the boat.

  한 가지만 꼭 기억하라: 물 위를 걷고 싶다면, 반드시 배 밖으로 나와야 한다. Amen
