Esther 4:14 – 16 

The gospel, according to Esther 에스더에 따른 복음 

Esther is one of two books in the Bible in which God's name is not mentioned. Yet, God is the main character. 

Even though He is unnamed, God puts Himself on display in extraordinary ways. 

에스더서는 성경에서 하나님의 이름이 언급되지 않은 두 책 중 하나이다. 그러나, 하나님이 주인공이시다. 

하나님은 무명으로 등장하지만, 놀라운 방식으로 자신의 모습을 드러내신다. 

The background to the Esther story is about 480 BC.   At the time, the Persian Empire was the largest in history, 

ruled by Xerxes.  Xerxes, or Ahasuerus, had a violent temper, and it displayed itself in this action against his 

queen Vashti, whom he demoted after she dared to resist him in public.  

에스더 이야기의 배경은 기원전 480 년경이다. 이 시기에 페르시아 제국은 역사상 가장 큰 제국이었으며, 

크세르크세스왕이 통치하고 있었다. 크세르크세스, 즉 아하수에로는 성격이 난폭했고, 그 성격이 그의 왕비 

바스티에 대한 행동에서도 드러났다. 바스티가 공개적으로 그에게 저항하자 그녀를 강등한 것이다. 

The plot revolves around the survival of the Jews, who stood on the threshold of a holocaust.  Mordecai’s refusal 

to pay Haman homage enraged the petty leader so much that he determined to make the whole Jewish 

population pay with their lives.  Word of their impending fate spread throughout the Jewish community.  

Realizing the fate of his people hung by the thread of Esther’s relationship with the king, Mordecai appeals to 

the queen. He asks her to do a courageous thing – to stand alone before the king.  Rising to the occasion of her 

need, God grants Esther the wisdom to devise a strategy that will eliminate the archenemy of her people.  The 

outcome, in short, is that Esther reveals the plot against her people in a dramatic move.  The people are saved, 

and the antagonist is punished.   

이 이야기는 대참사의 위기에 처한 유대인들의 생존을 중심으로 전개된다. 모르드개가 하만에게 경의를 

표하기를 거부하자, 옹졸한 지도자 하만은 크게 분노하여 모든 유대인이 목숨을 바치도록 하겠다고 결심한다. 

유대인 공동체 사이에 그들의 다가오는 운명에 대한 소문이 퍼진다. 자신의 민족의 운명이 에스더와 왕의 

관계에 달려 있다는 것을 깨달은 모르드개는 왕비에게 도움을 요청한다. 모르드개는 에스터에게 용기 있는 

행동을 취해 홀로 왕 앞에 나설 것을 부탁한다. 필요에 응답하신 하나님은 에스더에게 민족의 원수를 제거할 

전략을 세울 수 있는 지혜를 주신다. 결과적으로 에스더는 극적인 방식으로 자신의 민족에 대한 음모를 밝히고, 

사람들은 구원받고 적대자는 처벌받는다. 

The power of one 하나의 힘  

Our text stands out as the pinnacle of this great drama. Esther, you are God’s chosen person for a time like this.  

The future rests on you!  No one else.  God has called you for this time.  God doesn’t have a plan B!

우리의 본문은 이 위대한 드라마의 정점으로 중요한 부분이다. 에스더, 당신은 이와 같은 때를 위해 하나님이 

선택한 사람이다. 미래는 당신에게 달려 있다! 다른 누구도 아니다. 하나님은 이 시간을 위하여 당신을 

부르셨다. 하나님에게는 플랜 B가 없다! 

Author Edward Everett said: 저자 에드워드 에버렛은 다음과 같이 말했다: 

• I am only one. 나는 단지 하나의 존재이다.   

• But still I am one.  하지만 나는 여전히 하나의 존재이다.   

• I cannot do everything, 나는 모든 것을 할 수는 없다.   

• But still I can do something; 하지만 여전히 나는 무언가를 할 수 있다; 

• And because I cannot do everything 그리고 내가 모든 것을 할 수 없기 때문에   

• I will not refuse to do the something I can do. 내가 할 수 있는 그 무언가를 하는 것을 거부하지 않겠다. 

What difference can I make?  내가 어떤 차이를 만들 수 있을까?   

• In 1776, one vote gave America the English language instead of German 

1776 년, 한 표가 미국에 독일어 대신 영어를 선사했다.   

• In 1923, one vote gave Adolph Hitler control of the Nazi Party. 

1923 년, 한 표가 아돌프 히틀러에게 나치당의 지배권을 주었다. 

Esther, God’s Chosen 하나님이 선택하신 에스더 

For Esther’s people in Persia, life turned bleak overnight.  We see the diabolical plan set in motion in Esther 3:8-15.  

The capital city is thrown into a state of confusion; the atmosphere is bewilderment.   

페르시아의 에스더의 유대민족은 하룻밤 사이에 삶이 암울해졌다. 에스더 3 장 8-15 절에서 극악무도한 계획이 

착수되는 것을 본다. 수도는 혼란에 빠지고, 분위기는 당혹감으로 가득 차 있다.   

Undergirding Mordecai’s plea for Esther’s involvement was the belief that one person can make a difference.   

모르드개가 에스더가 개입하기를 간청한 근간에는 한 사람이 변화를 가져올 수 있다는 믿음이 있었다. 

In Esther 4:13-14, we get this nail-biting and confrontational dialogue.  Esther: your people need you.  Esther, God 

wants you! 

에스더 4장 13-14 절에서 긴장감 넘치고 대립적인 대화를 만난다. 에스더: 당신의 민족이 당신을 필요로 하고 있어. 

에스더, 하나님이 당신을 원하고 계셔! 

The times we live in: 우리가 살고 있는 시대 

All will agree that our times can be described as turbulent. Economic disasters and other major challenges are 

building up to a climax of unknown proportions.   

우리 시대가 격동의 시대로 묘사될 수 있다는 데는 모두가 동의할 것이다. 경제적 재앙과 다른 주요 도전들이 

알려지지 않은 규모의 절정으로 치닫고 있다.

That is the macro picture.  What about the micro picture?  Look around you to the micro cosmos you live in.   

이것이 거시적 그림이다. 그렇다면 미시적 그림은 어떨까? 당신이 살고 있는 미시적 우주를 둘러보라.

The Good News of Esther 에스더의 복음  

This is the gospel of Esther.  That is the good news:  God has invested all your pain, sorrow, and joy in you for a time 

like this.  He has no other plan, no other person to fill your place.  Find a need and fill it.  Find a pain and heal it.  Pray, 

but be prepared to be the answer to your prayer.   

이것이 에스더의 복음이다. 그것이 바로 좋은 소식이다: 하나님은 당신의 모든 고통, 슬픔, 기쁨을 이와 같은 때를 

위해 당신에게 투자하셨다. 하나님께는 다른 계획이 없고, 당신의 자리를 채울 다른 사람이 없다. 필요를 찾아 

채우고, 고통을 찾아 치유하라. 기도하되, 기도의 응답이 될 준비를 하라. 

Making a difference will cost a price.  It will cost us the willingness to risk and move from the safe harbor of theory 

to the rough waters of reality.  Esther said bravely: “If I perish, I perish!” 

차이를 만들기 위해서는 값을 치루어야 한다. 이론이라는 안전한 항구에서 현실의 험한 파도로 옮겨가는 위험을 

감수할 의지가 필요하다. 에스더는 용감하게 말했다: “내가 죽으면 죽으리라!” 

Conclusion: 결론  

Amazing story. Where is God in the Book of Esther? The real hero, the real power behind the story, is never mentioned, 

but it is God. His hand of providence is manifest in every single tiny detail. His presence is more powerfully and 

dominantly visible here than maybe in any other story of this complexity in Scripture, though He’s never mentioned. 

His providence is at work in filtering down 25 million women to one, a Jew, chosen to be queen. The invisible hand 

of God is evident everywhere.  God thunders through the book of Esther. You can also find your story in Esther's story. 

The good news is that God has you in His hand for a time like this.  Then, in great confidence, surrender yourself into 

His hands, saying: Here I am.  And then, look out for what you find to do, and do it.   

놀라운 이야기. 에스더서에서 하나님은 어디에 계신가? 진정한 주인공, 이 이야기 뒤에 있는 진정한 힘은 결코 

언급되지 않지만, 그것은 하나님이다. 하나님의 섭리의 손은 모든 작은 세부사항에서 드러난다. 하나님의 임재는 

성경의 복잡한 다른 이야기들보다도 여기에서 더 강력하고 분명하게 나타나지만, 하나님은 결코 언급되지 않는다. 

하나님의 섭리는 2,500만 명의 여성 중에서 한 명, 유대인인 왕비를 선택하는 과정에서도 작용하고 있다. 하나님의 

보이지 않는 손은 모든 곳에서 분명하다. 하나님은 에스더서를 통해 크고 힘차게 말씀하신다. 당신도 에스더의 

이야기에서 자신의 이야기를 찾을 수 있다. 좋은 소식은 하나님께서는 이와 같은 때를 위해 당신을 그분의 손에 쥐고 

계신다는 것이다. 그러므로 큰 확신을 가지고 당신을 하나님의 손에 맡기고 이렇게 말하라: 제가 여기 있습니다. 

그리고 나서 할 일을 찾고, 그 일을 하라.  Amen 아멘​
